Siong Leng is having its annual gala performance again. This time, something more exciting to all the senses will be presented. This is also an event where the Association raises funds to help its year long programme of promoting Nanyin and training young people on the performance which includes playing the traditional musical instrument (which have remained unchanged for more than a thousand years).

If you enjoy this rare and ancient music, or even want to see what it is all about (you will not be disappointed, you might get a gentle culture shock, perhaps), this is the event to go to. Gather your friends and form a table and enjoy the night of ancient music, songs and food.

【胡丝嫩想——王丽娜二胡独奏会】

本地年轻二胡演奏家——王丽娜，将于本月14日下午5点假ARTS HOUSE （旧国会大厦艺术之家）举办个人第二场二胡独奏会【胡丝嫩想】。音乐会将演奏多首二胡名曲，如【红梅随想曲】、【汉宫秋月】、【兰花花叙事曲】、【新婚别】、【思念】等节目。

王丽娜是湘灵音乐社演奏员、安德逊初级学院校友会华乐团助理指挥与乐团首席、星海艺术研究会与人民协会青年华乐团演奏员。其8岁开始学习钢琴，并对传统民族音乐有着浓厚的兴趣。2004-2007年间，她获得福建会馆、国家艺术理事会奖学金及本地助学金，完成音乐学位。2007年在黄晨达老师的指导下考获二等一级荣誉音乐学士学位。现向黄安源老师学习二胡。2007年4月，被湘灵音乐社送往厦门向吴世安与王秀怡老师学习南音。目前教导与演奏二胡以及南音二弦。曾在2006年举办过个人独奏会，并多次到海外演出。曾获1999年国家艺术理事会主办的全国华乐比赛亚军、2001年全国华乐比赛高级组合奏冠军。

On 19 Jun 08, the Marine Parade CC Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club with the Food from the Heart staged its third year running Charity Nite. As in the past years, they performed for two nights.

This year, the performance was held in the NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre. Three artistes from the Shanghai Yue Opera - Hua Yi-qing, Huang Hui, and Chen Qiong-qiong - were invited to perform with the members of the Marine Parade CC Shanghai Yue Appreciation Club.

It was another night of beautiful performance that kept the audience on their toes, wanting to know more as each episode ended.

Siong Leng stages Li Ah Sian 李亚仙

On 11 August, 2007, Siong Leng (湘灵) Musical Association made its debut at the Esplanade, fondly known as the Durian by locals (and lewlian kak by the Hokkiens). With two shows on Li Ah Sian 李亚仙 (Li Ya Xian), the cast played to an almost full house. Considering that it is a Hokkien (minnan hua) opera, it was a huge success, with the show attracting people of all ages, and even many foreigners, including students in the local international schools.

A popular Hokkien opera piece known to my mother's generation (she's in her 70s), this is quite new to the younger generations, especially to those who have less exposure to the Hokkien dialect and its culture. Hence, this show by Siong Leng and Esplanade has added another dimension in the local culture scene.

To the talented young cast, well done and we look forward to another show at the Durian, soon. (^^)

On June 22 and June 23, the Marine Parade CC Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club is organising the Shanghai Yue Opera Charity Nights to help Food from the Heart raise funds.

The highlight of the show will be 2 famous stars from Shanghai, Ms Hua Yi-Qing and Ms Huang Hui, who together with members of the Marine Parade CC Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club will perform in this year's Opera.

Due to a very successful production in 2006, the Club has decided to put together another very exciting performance this year presenting a full-length opera "The Legend of Song Hong".

This is a historical epic based on events that happened during the end of Eastern Han Dynasty and the beginning of Western Han Dynasty. It is a heart-warming story about the virtues of Song Hong, a premier who served under Emperor Liu Xiu, founder of Western Han Dynasty.

This year’s performance will be even greater than last year's, as the Club will be having a Director from China to direct the show. There will also be brand new costumes from Shanghai.

Nan Yin at Tian Hock Keng

It's Guan Yin's birthday today (2M19) and Hokkien Huay Kuan with Siong Leng Nan Yin group staged a Nan Yin concert in front of the Hokkien Huay Kuan building with the Tian Hock Keng opened for worship.

By 8pm, almost all the seats were filled up and some spare chairs were being placed.

For this concert, the troupe spared no efforts in getting the performers to dress in Tang Dynasty dresses - wow, they looked good, especially on the ladies!

The first song was in dedication to Guan Yin, singing praise of Guan Yin and telling about the three importants dates of celebration in honour of Guan Yin, 2M19, 6M19 and 9M19 (in lunar calendar, month-date)

This night was a night of the younger generation. The older members only performed on the first song dedicated to Guan Yin. The younger ones took over from there with the songs, ensemble and even one with a dance, all very beautifully cheorographed.

Thanks to Kevin Ang, he has produced an English edition pamphlet explaining about Nan Yin and Tian Hock Keng. I hope to be able to get his copy in pdf so that you could also download to read. In the next performance, perhaps, a similar copy in different languages could be made available in the internet.

An ancient song and music, an ancient language - the origin of Tang and the Hokkiens - have been preserved and today, thanks to the dedication of the Siong Leng Musical Association, we get to enjoy what our grandparents have been enjoying in the early years in Singapore.

Kim Eng Teochew Opera's Last Curtain Call

On 11 Feb 2007, it could well be the last performance by Kim Eng Teochew Opera at Defu Lane. Being the oldest Teochew Opera in Singapore, it has seen it great days. With the current trend of less people speaking Teochew, a southern Chinese dialect, there are less people watching the opera.

With the closing of the Kim Eng Teochew Opera, the Chinese temple celebrations in Singapore will have one less Teochew Opera to perform. Many fans of Teochew Operas will miss this opera.

The members of the opera may resurface with a smaller puppet troupe.

新加坡余娱儒乐社

余娱儒乐社成立于1912年，创始人是先贤陈子栗先生。陈先生通音律，精丝竹，常邀集同好，会乐消谴，参与者多系一时之彦。后于公元1912年，联合郭廷通、杨添文等人发起组织该社，成一正式团体，假谦裕号为临时社址，命名余娱儒乐社。盖取义于：“藉业务之余暇，萃大雅于一堂，操丝竹以谴兴，托清歌而娱情”。而创社宗旨，则为提倡汉剧，研究音乐，发展文娱，联络感情，协助公益，服务社会。

本社自成立至公元1965年，每逢社庆纪念及义演，皆用黄剧传统历史剧本，以汉剧演出。及后因本社导师陈羹石等人相继去世，继起乏人，因而渐告改演潮剧。

自1988年开起，傅宝树出任社长。十多年来，余娱儒乐社邀请中国导演林蕴育、朱绍琛、叶请发等人前来指导，先后排演了《蝴蝶梦》、《桃花梦》、《姜通上京》、《桂枝告状》、《中国公主-杜兰朵》、《墙头马上》等大型潮剧。培养了林秀凤、黄玉姿、陈国来、黄应华、杨敦揩、刘妹英等一代青年演员。

1997年适逢我社成立85年纪念，为社庆演出由意大利歌剧改编的《中国公主杜兰朵》，深得好评。公元2000年1月我社参与其他之儒乐社参与由艺坊主办的“三喜缘”演出，可说是创儒乐社联和演出之先锋。

余娱儒乐社除了每逢社庆演出外，还参与戏剧节及文化节之盛典演出。近年来，也到各联络所巡回演出，受邀参与之海外庆典如下：1992年：马来西亚砂劳越国际艺术节1993年：日本鹿儿岛文化节1993年：'93汕头国际潮剧节1996年：韩国春川国际戏剧节2000年：法国巴黎国际喜剧节

新加坡南华儒剧社

新加坡南华儒剧社的创立源于新加坡黄氏炽昌联谊社。1963年，新加坡黄氏炽昌联谊社内有一群爱好潮剧的人士，他们平时喜好以演奏潮乐、清唱潮曲助兴。当年风靡中国的潮剧电影《告亲夫》、《苏六娘》、《火烧临江楼》、《陈三五娘》等，陆续在新加坡上映，深深使狮城观众沉迷陶醉。因此，社员们共同创建成立了戏剧研究组以过一过演戏的瘾，并排练了《苏六娘》作为庆祝节日演出节目。

由于黄氏炽昌联谊社属于黄氏宗乡会馆，而潮剧研究组却集结了许多其他籍贯及姓氏的组员，于是，该社鼓励并支持对潮剧有兴趣的人士联合黄氏炽昌联谊社潮剧研究组成员，成立了南华儒剧社。

1963年10月20日，南华儒剧社正式宣告成立。剧社名字取"南洋华人儒剧社"之意，不论籍贯是何省份何县市，凡是华人皆有资格入社。该社当年成立的宗旨纯粹为联络同好者的情谊，共同研究音乐、歌剧。1999年, 南华儒剧社已步入了第36个年头，随着整个客观环境的改换与局势的变迁，南华儒剧社以更成熟的心态与步伐，稳健地成长。在弘扬、推动中华传统文化艺术方面，更是新加坡人民瞩目的一支生力军。

新加坡揭阳会馆潮剧团

新加坡揭阳会馆潮剧团成立于1995年9月16日，是揭阳会馆属下文化艺术活动的一个单位。

办团宗旨在于为潮剧爱好者提供一个潮剧文化的环境，让他们在一起学习、练习、表演、切磋技艺，以发扬光大潮剧文化。

潮剧团的前身是巴耶里第四分区乐龄潮剧组，揭阳会馆潮剧团成立后，所有的活动都集中在揭阳会馆。目前潮剧团的团员超过一百人，剧团的主要活动是每年在剧院公演大型的传统潮剧，例常的活动包括周六及周末的歌唱班及周三的基本功练习，具体活动由林慧朱、陈国来及王雪媛任指导。

96年以来，本团演出了《红丝错》、《汉武之恋》及《仇荐》等剧目，2001年7月9日至10日演出古装潮剧《丹青魂》。上述剧目都是新编戏曲剧目，它们都是根据越剧、秦腔及闽剧改编而成。在其他传统节日或国庆节期间，剧团还进行了折子戏、趣剧、潮剧合唱、独唱等小型演出。

Cantonese Nanyin Performance

Nanyin (Namyum) is a strain of ballad sung in Kreta Ayer over the decades. It is very much a heritage shared by the Cantonese people in Singapore, Hong Kong and along the Pearl River in China. The song of Nan Shaoyi, Burning of Joss Paper, depicts a slice of life more than a hundred years ago, yet with traces of it still cherished by many Chinese of today. It is an integration of musical elements from the Tang and Yuan dynasties, Geyang accent and Minnan folk music.

南音是牛车水的一缕乡音,散发着新加坡、香港、珠江沿岸的广东人的共同情感。« 男烧衣»这支南音来自清朝未年,里头描绘的生活习惯和人情世故到今天还是依稀可辨。它荟集了盛唐以来中原雅乐之精华,后来又吸引了元曲、戈阳腔的特长, 并与闽南的民间音乐融汇一体.

The Sai Ho Piat Su (Teochew for Xi He Bie Shu　西河别墅) , an association for the Lim Clan since 1937, has Teochew Opera singing classes, under the tutelage of an accomplished opera Singer from Teochew, China. This class is open to anyone interested.

Of all the local Chinese operas, I think Cantonese Opera is probably one of the most active and visible ones. Apart from the professional opera groups, there are a number of amateur ones and many are taking an interests in it.

Inside Chinatown, the Kong Chao Wui Kun (Gang Zhou Hui Guan 岡州会馆) , Gang Zhou Association, which is probably older than its building which was built in 1924, is offering Cantonese Opera Singing lessons 粤曲教唱班. This Association has been amongst the pioneers in having a Cantonese Opera and a Lion and Dragon Dance troupe.

So, if you are interested in the singing class, call them at 62239806. The building is along New Bridge Road, opposite to Pearl Centre.

Yue Ju (越剧) or Shanghai Yue Opera originated from the Zhejiang Province where Shanghai was the catalyst for its popularity. Yue Opera’s dramatic style, drawing on modern theatrical techniques and its expressive, emotional and melodic singing style should go down well with the young generation. The language is akin to spoken Mandarin, another important draw for the young who are more comfortable with the official Chinese language than dialects. As an art form, Yue Opera is extremely beautiful and enjoyable to watch. Despite the historical settings of its stories, most plots are relevant in the context of modern day society. For instance “The Peacocks Flying to the Southeast”, adapted from the famous Han Dynasty poem. Stories like these extol the greatness of true love – a universal language.

Tales of love and sacrifices make riveting drama; most stories evolve around other universal virtues like humility, courage, loyalty and duty, filial piety and responsibility. For the younger generation who have missed an orientation in a theatrical form that was once popularly embraced by the common people, the excerpts selected by Marine Parade Community Club, Shanghai Yue Opera Club for this charity performance are carefully picked for their educational and entertainment as well as artistic values.

Members of MPCC Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club and students from CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School will be performing together with 2 Yue Opera stars, Hua Yi-Qing & Huang Hui who will fly in all the way from Shanghai for our 2 nights’ charity shows. As for the music, the SAF MDC Chinese Instrumental Ensemble will be a perfect accompaniment to both our evenings at Victoria Theatre. The conductor of this orchestra is MAJ Tay Soon Huat. To help appreciate this traditional art form, we will provide line-by-line English translations of the scripts.

马林百列民众俱乐部――上海越剧欣赏学会，正是以发扬中国优良传统美德、推广优美越剧为宗旨而成立的一个本地年轻活跃的业余团体，成立短短几年，对于推广越剧艺术从来不遗余力，为本地越剧舞台凭添许多光彩的同时，更为慈善事业尽绵力，每次演出都为本地慈善团体筹募善款。

Street wayangs or street operas in Singapore are in most cases dependent on temple celebrations. More so for the Hokkien and Teochew operas. The symbiotic relationship between the street operas and the Chinese temples must have gone back centuries. In the days when most people are illiterate, the street opera is a very powerful medium of education and knowledge transfer.

Our grandparents and even parents learnt much about Chinese history through the operas. In many ways, so were our knowledge of Deities in the Chinese temples. Interestingly, when a spirit medium go into trance, representing a Deity, somehow we might try to relate to the same character we saw at the opera. The only difference is that now the temple ground is a stage, and all of us, devotees and onlookers become part of that stage.

Margaret Chan's book: Ritual is Theatre, Theatre is Ritual: Tang-ki: Chinese Spirit Medium Worshop, is a timely piece of book and information for us to better understand rituals and their powerful relationship with theatre, and vice versa. Many questions that we have but have yet to find the answers, could well have the answers in this book. (^^) A very valuable guide for local Chinese temple and sintua observers and even devotees.

In the 1920s (abt 80-90yrs ago), the first Teochew Opera Troupe entered Singapore, named
赛永丰潮剧团 (Sai Yong Feng).

Then followed by a troupe from Chao Shan named 老赛宝丰 (Lao Sai Bao Feng).

Teochew Opera Troupes that you can find now are,

2. 老一枝香 (Lao Yi Zhi Xiang)
3. 金鹰 (Jin Ying)

What we have taken for granted for decades is now slowly fading away. Before that happens, I hope to compile a list of these street wayangs, be there full operas or puppet shows. They form a strong part of the Chinese Heritage in Singapore.

Here I hope to document the name of the street wayang, the contacts and the history. Any information is welcomed.
